HorseTech’s new Sand Trap +DFM product combines extremely high purity (95% +) blonde psyllium husk with food-grade flaxseed and a complete direct-fed microbial package to make a more complete psyllium/sand colic product.

Psyllium: 

HorseTech selected very high purity source of psyllium husk at 95% purity.  We found that the psyllium purity issue can be misleading to consumers for the following reason.  We found products labeled as 100% pure psyllium, and upon visiting the manufacturer's web site, we found the product listed as 80% psyllium.  So, in essence, the manufacturer was claiming that the product contained nothing but (100%) psyllium husk—which happened to be 80% pure…  Very misleading.

The in-house trials that we conducted indicated that the water absorption capacity, or swell volume, of the psyllium that we have selected to be approximately 40+ milliliters per gram of material with a purity rating of 95%.

Physical Form:

In-house trials on competitors’ products indicated that when placed in water, pelleted products did not break down and absorb fluid readily—even after 24 hours in water.  The tighter the pellet, the more this tended to be true.  “Crumbled” products fared better, but they neither swelled as quickly, nor absorbed as much water per gram as the higher quality un-pelleted products.

For this reason, Sand Trap is not pelleted.  Rather, it is a free flowing natural form of psyllium husk that swells and jells easily and rapidly for excellent results.

Flaxseed: 

We added a small amount of our food-grade flaxseed.  Lab trials indicated that the addition of a small amount of flax resulted in a material with greater  “grabbing” and “holding” capacity.   If you mix Sand Trap +DFM with water and allow it to gel, you will be able to demonstrate this by dipping a stirring stick into the material.  When you remove the stick you will be able to see how the material clings, and you will note the “slime” that is known to form when flax is fed.  If you will dip a stirring stick into a plain psyllium product, you will note that the stick tends to “pop” free and there is less, if any, sticky “slime” or “goo”.

Direct Fed Microbial Package:

Sand Trap +DFM includes a complete direct-fed microbial package similar to that provided by our standard probiotic product, Pro-Lactic DFM.  To the best of our knowledge, Sand Trap +DFM is the only psyllium product on the market, which includes such a package.  DFMs serve to keep the digestive tract functioning properly and may lessen the probability of colic.  We feel that this is a useful and valuable addition to our psyllium product.

Serving Size:

Sand Trap is generally used at a rate of approximately 2 to 4 ounces (by weight) per day.  The scoop enclosed will hold approximately two (2) ounces by weight. 

Many people prefer to use a one week per month feeding system with their sand products, and Sand Trap +DFM may be used in this manner.  Generally, the daily dosage will be 2-4 ounces, and the product will be fed for 7 days straight.  The product is then removed from the diet for three weeks.  So, "one week on then three weeks off"...  Your local veterinarian may prefer a slight variance to this program and we'd be happy to visit with either you or your veterinarian if you have concerns about how to best use our Sand Trap +DFM in this type of a program.

We found that the feeding directions on the competitors’ psyllium products were unclear and sometimes in error.  We found that the scoops provided by some manufacturers did not accurately provide the measure stated on the label (fully understanding that there can be some allowable variance).  Some were not even close while a few were right on the money.  Some, it appeared, confused the scoop size (one-ounce liquid measure) with what the scoop would actually hold (measured by weight).  We believe that our scoop size is properly sized and will provide close to the amount of product indicated allowing for a more accurate dosing.  Again, our simple trials indicated that our competitors did not, in many cases, provide the information and scoop that would allow the consumer to actually arrive at a dosage that was close to accurate.

NOTE: Use Sand Trap +DFM with the advice, and consent, of your attending veterinarian.  Do not feed to horses actively exhibiting signs of colic unless specifically prescribed by the attending veterinarian. Sand Trap +DFM is not intended for  use in treatment of colic.  If your horse is exhibiting signs of colic, do not administer this product--call your local, attending veterinarian immediately for treatment.
